Chapter Twenty-Seven

Stephen

In all his worlds, all his hopes and dreams, and maybe even his nightmares, Stephen never imagined that he would be holed up, practically hiding, from the Humans. And not only that, but that his companions would be a witch, a demon, two super children and a … something. He could just leave. They weren’t his problem. He tapped his fingers against his thigh. They didn’t matter to him. They were nothing and no one. Just rejects the same way he was. And life was hard—so fucking hard. Maybe they would learn that lesson themselves. Life wasn’t all things pretty. The sooner they learned that, the better.

Toke was sleeping, but Nakita … she was the curious one of the two. She was sitting with her back to a tree—like she already knew that rule. Never turn your back to wide open space. She was too young to have learned that, though. But Stephen couldn’t deny that she had a position where she could see all around them and run if she needed to; it had to be more than just chance. Either that, or Stephen was just looking too much into it. Perhaps her parents had shown her. It would be something he would teach his children very early in their lives—if he ever had any. She reminded him a little of a young Gemma, the way she watched all around her but remained silent. The way she seemed to take everything in even though she was occupied with something else. She even leaned forward and held her tongue in the corner of her mouth the same way that Gemma did. It brought a bittersweet smile to Stephen’s lips. His mind always seemed to want to go down this pity party path. He couldn’t allow it; it would do him no good. Shit was done now, and he had to move on and accept it all. He ground his teeth, exhaling heavily.

Get a grip, Stephen.

He stared out into the vast woodlands. It would have been great to just run and get lost in them. To be free. They appeared to be undisturbed—no path, no direction—much like him right now. Would be possible for a man to walk the entire earth in his lifetime? Always moving, never stopping. He imagined where he would go.

How big was Exile anyway? He knew it was more than one island. He knew so much of it was inhabited by Humans so they could control the Others who lived here—because these Others had no choice. It was runaway land. But it was free land, too. Maybe he could get a boat to another place and just become a faceless nobody. He really could be Nick Mason, leaving behind Stephen Davies … just the shadow of a shifter who once killed a bunch of people. But so much as he had lost, he knew he would do it all again. In a heartbeat. For protecting his family, his father and alpha, his sister, he would do what needed to be done, no matter the consequences.
